Congrats to Emily Roe for becoming an Ironman.  You raced a perfect race.

There is no doubt in my mind nutrition and pace control is a HUGE part of Ironman racing.   During the past seven months I've been training on the bike in a steady zone, slightly faster than an easy pace, building the endurance I'll need to ride 112 miles comfortably and build enough fitness on the bike where I can run great off the bike, and not have a sufferfest on the run.  The heart rate bpm I have been using for my zone was collected from data over several rides and races.   So, I had a question... "Did I correctly identify the zones?"

What I need is validation, before my race, I am training in the right zone for an Ironman distance race.  Jason Hamm had mentioned Source Endurance offers testing, and bike fits, and gave them a good recommendation.   I like Austin, and have clients in Austin, so why not take a trip down there.  How fun would that be?  An added benefit is the guys and gals at Source Endurance come to town and complete in our local events (Brandon Marsh, 2008 Red River Tri and 2008 RCT Overall Winner).

As you can see from the pic above,  I made it to Austin and had the tests completed.  The lactate test is fairly easy'ish to complete.  I'm not getting into the specifics here, but we did the test and got some solid numbers.  The VO2 Max ... is where you have to go all out.  Give everything you have and then push harder when you think you can not push anymore.  The test lasted 7min for me.  When I got to 6min into the test and the resistance increased I had to come out of the saddle and push, grunt, yell...  Brandon, Derick and Kelly were there cheering me on.  And this definitely helped.  At 6min my quads where on fire, and my mind was telling me to stop.  I just pushed those thoughts out, and kept the hammer down.

After a 10min cool down, and a quick change of clothes I started my bike fit.  Source Endurance uses Retul to do the bike fitting. David and Brandon both worked the bike, me and me shoes for the bike fit.  The biggest point I took away is my right leg is 1cm shorter than my left.  We stuffed an extra sole from another biking shoe to make up the difference, dropped the bars a bit more, dialed in the pedals and we were done with the bike fit.

I’m blown away, and really impressed with everyone at Source Endurance.  They helped to unload my bike, had top quality lab equipment, and everyone is super knowledgeable.  They even have coaching services so you can get the most out of your training as possible.  And I think this is very important.  Time management can be a hassle, when family life, work, and training.  If you can train less, more efficiently, in the correct way, and make huge improvements, then this is the way to go.

Right before I left for a meeting in Austin with a client, Derick went over the test results with me and gave me some excellent tips about improving my fitness (getting faster).   Derick knows his stuff.  He was spot on about me being a tad bit lazy with trainer workouts, not pushing up the power when I should have been.  Kinda like touring on the bike instead of training.

I wish I could have stayed a bit longer and discussed my test results more in depth with Derick, but I had to make a meeting.  Thanks to everyone at Source Endurance for providing top quality service and location.  I'll definitely be back.

Peace Out!

Wow.  What an amazing race.  I watched the coverage online and saw one of the lead female's swim up to and catch the the second pack of Elite men and then this same group dropped one of the Elite men.  And Max Longree came from behind on the swim and bike, and ran past Chris McDonald on the run, finishing 20min in front of 2nd place.  That's a solid performance, running 2:48 in 94F.

I really enjoyed the online coverage for this race.   IronmanLive.com did a great job, and the stream was decent.  I got to see Seth, Lesley, and Bridget all cross the finish line.  Congrats everyone.

This is the week!  On Sunday August 31st, Bridget, Lesley, and Seth will be each wake early in the morning, eat, drink some fluids, and head out for a day of aerobic bliss.  A 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and to finish it off... a 26.2 mile run.  Lots of gatorade, water, gels, PBJ, ... and who knows what else will be consumed on the course.

Those with the monster cable package, Ford Ironman  Louisville will air on Versus.   Otherwise check out ironmanlive.com for the updates.

On Sept 1st, you can sign up for Ironman Louisville, Ironman 70.3  Bosie, and Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island (What?)!  If you ever needed a reason to travel and get in some good training just pick a race, get a training plan, and set your target.   Lot's of choices to make, claim your spot before all the slots sell out.

Good Luck Gals & Guys, we'll be cheering you on!

When I first started all this triathlon stuph, I attended a local camp in Dallas (2006) to try and figure out what base, build, peak and all the tri-talk terminology meant.   It had been quite some time since I had done any serious aerobic exercise for performance, and I just wanted to pick up some knowledge from others.

I met Justin Daerr at this camp, and it was pretty kewl to get to train with someone of the Elite status.  Super great guy.

Awesome race Justin!  I was pulling for you all the way.

Check out his blog for training tips.

Nothing like some cool weather all day Sat and early Sunday morning to help our athletes achieve some notable personal bests and firsts for the race on Saturday.   Afterward, a few of us headed out to Little Rock to grab some Brushetta and hang out in Hot Springs for a bit and then drive back to Degray to finish out the Sunday racing on tired legs in the Sprint race.

The Degray course was changed up this year, and I would have rather ridden the old bike course.  I enjoyed the new run course (1:43:28), but I'm not sure if the feeling would have been the same if the overcast conditions did not exist on Saturday.

The Atheltes in the half were...

Louise Smyth (2nd Overall Women)
Anna Means (3rd Overall Women)
Martha Siskron
John Bullock
Craig Nicholson
Denise Cook
Roger Weldon
Daniel Anderson
Mike McHalffey
Mike Cook (First Half)
Tony Bouso (1st in Age Group)
Teresa White (First Half)
Lee Stevens (First Half)

Susan Vaughan (3rd Overall Women)
Casey Bowen (3rd Overall Men)

Fellow Sunrise members will be competing in the Half Iron distance race on Saturday or the Sprint race on Sunday.  A select few have choosen to do the Double (Half on Sat and Sprint on Sun).  The Sprint race is Arkansas's State Championship race, and will be worth double the points for the club for all of our athletes.

More info about the race can be found at DLT Multisport.

Don't forget the Sunrise meeting August 11th at 7:00pm.

Come swim at Southside from 6-7 and then stay for dinner and a meeting.

We have money to spend and want your input. Alan Harris is going to be available to tell us how we can switch the email group over to the forum without any interruption in service. If you do not like receiving a bunch of emails than you may want to come hear what he has to say. We also need to start thinking about nominations for next year's officers. It's been fun but it's time for some new energy and ideas.

Remember, this is YOUR club. If you have complaints about what your officers are doing to represent YOU then come share them (we don't know unless you tell us).

Please RSVP so Clarke can get a good head count for the food.

The entire family is invited!!! We will have a lifeguard there to watch the kids while we eat and meet.

The wildly popular Southside swims with Dustin will sadly come to end a week from today. Frown The original plan was to offer these swims as a benefit to those training for DeGray. Seeing that Arakadelphia is NEXT WEEKEND (yikes!) the time to end is near.

Butch may be willing to workout an "open swim" arrangement if pool time is available. He does not return from vacation until next week so look for more information to follow later.

Another one for the record books! Note for next year, we'll need two cases instead of one and a half of post race beverages.  Congrats to everyone who completed.
