What a day with the Guys at Endurance Corner!   We started with a quick breakfast at 6AM and divided the biking into two groups…  the peppy group (IM 10:30 and lower) and the friendly group.  The peppy group swam before the ride.  I was in the friendly group.

We rolled out at 7:30AM and rode from downtown Tucson up to Madera Canyon.    We had a good group of people and only one mishap.  A small collision and a couple of Dallas’ites went down.  But it was a non-spectacular crash.  We were going around 10mph up a steep grade.

The climb into Madera Canyon is kind of misleading.  When you get to the park it is a slow and gradual climb which looks like a false flat.  The climb lasts for about 13 miles with grades of 2-18% (18% being near the entrance of the park).   I rode the last stretch (18%) with Selina (another Dallas’ite who bike races not involved in the crash).   I was not maxed out but I was certainly not in an aerobic zone.   The last bit of the climb we dropped from 10mph to 8mph.   It was nice when we finally reached the park and turned around.  You could see the distance we had climbed (4500 ft) and it was sweet.

On the way back we rolled out of the park and for the first 3-4 miles I was averaging 35-40 mph, just hanging on and swore I was not going to hit the brakes.  It was a pretty sweet downhill.

I recouped for a bit and let the group catch up and then we started our ride back.    For the last one-two hours I rode tempo with Jeff S. all the way back with some solid down hills pushing 22-24mph all the way back.  Me and Jeff S. finished together each taking some good pulls.  He had a few more pulls than me.

We had a small lunch and then headed to the pull.  I got in about 30min of swimming before cramping up and calling it a day.  Solid ride.  So so swim.

Hello Sunrise,
Because we have added a few new members since this bulletin was published , I am sending it out once again. Please note the short time frame for getting an order in.
I am getting close to reaching the minimum order needed for placing a re-order for Sunrise uniforms and as soon as I do, I will be placing the order. So, if anyone wants to get in on this second and likely final opportunity to get your new 2009 Yellow on Black Sunrise Uniform, you need to act now.
Lead time for delivery is "8 weeks or less", same as first order and we received that order in under 5 weeks. But again, we need to act quickly.
To facilitate this process in the most timely manner, I need for you to:
1) - download a copy of the uniform order form (find it at the sunrise link below, uniforms tab),
2) - complete the order form and
3) - mail it along with your check [payable to Sunrise Tri Club] to me at:
 Joe Hinton
 104 Timber Ridge Dr.
 Bossier City, LA, 71112.
You are welcome to bring your order to my home, same address as above, but call first to make sure I'm in.
Please do this as soon as possible so we can get the order out quickly.
I am "targeting" March 30th for placing the order w/ Pactimo.
I will hold your check until the order is ready to place. Should the minimum order requirements not be met your check will be returned.
If you need to call me for any reason, my ph# is 746-8178. Please let me know when you mail your order w/payment so I'll know it's coming.
I urge you to discuss your size with others who have the new uniforms. The uniforms fit tight especially in the top area and most everyone upsized one size in suits and tops. Bottoms seem okay. Once I place the order with Pactimo it's final and no changes or late add on can be made.

Please do not use your REPLY tab to respond to me but Email directly to joehinton@bellsouth.net.

Thanks
joe

Well, I was feeling pretty good and fit then I got the camp schedule and now I have a bit of the nerves.  LOL.  I'll probably need eat an entire batch of cookies when I get back.

Monday: Madera Canyon ride. 150K route Southeast of Tucson. The first (and last) 60K is generally flat before a gradual climb of 8 miles followed by 3 miles of a steeper grade (return is a descent; route is an out-and-back). Quicker riders will be swimming before the ride and rolling out at 9:00. Base riders will roll out at 8:00 with a loosen swim to follow in the afternoon.

Mt Lemmon Tuesday: Mt Lemmon Day (On your left). Be ready with your cycling, running, and swimming gear to depart Hotel Arizona at 7:15 a.m. for Udall Park. We will roll out as a group from Udall Park at 8:00 am. We will regroup at the base of the climb (approximately 30-45 minutes into the ride) and everyone can ascend at their own pace. The climb is 21 miles long with over 6000 feet of vertical gain. The turnaround will be just past the village of Palisade. After reaching Palisade you will descend for one kilometer where you will see the sag vehicle on your left just shy of the 8000 ft elevation sign. After descending, athletes will have the option of running off the bike in Udall Park.

We will provide lunch in Udall Park following your transition run. After lunch, we will travel to the pool for a loosening and/or base swim workout.

Wednesday: The 40 mile or 40K day. Today will kick off with a swim at Archer Pool (depart hotel at 5:45 a.m.; seriously :). Following the swim we will have breakfast at the hotel. There will be two group rides today with a 40 mile or 40K option. The primary focus of today is to allow a bit recovery after two challenging days. Run options will be ad hoc. Afternoon is off with massages occurring from 2-6 p.m. Laundry Day!

Kitt Peak - Saturday Ride

Thursday: Oro Valley Day (Big Swim Day). Today we will cross town to the beautiful Oro Valley Pool of the North side of Tucson. The day will begin with group runs in the a.m. prior to swimming (determined the night before). Following breakfast; at 8:45 a.m. have all your cycling and swim gear ready for a 9:00 a.m. departure (by Van) to the Oro Valley Pool. After swimming (and lunch in Oro valley) we will ride 90K back to the hotel via Sandoria Road and Gates Pass.

Friday: Long run in Saguaro East Park. Athletes will depart from the hotel at 6:00 a.m. (or earlier TBD) for a long run in S. E. Park. All run routes will be done on an out-and-back course. Swim will follow at 11:30 a.m after your morning breakfast. Today will be a day off the bike with a free afternoon to lounge and recover. Massages from 2-6 p.m. today. Laundry Day!

Saturday: Kitt Peak (on the right). What we have all been waiting for!!! This is a 170K (106 miles) route that includes a summit of Kitt Peak (12 mile climb to 6000+ feet in elevation). The first and last 40 miles are generally flat and can prove to be challenging (or really fast!) if the wind kicks up. The middle section of the ride is a 12 mile climb with a consistent grade (8%) that kicks up slightly in the final 2 miles. It is best to save something for the final 40 miles in case the wind is not in a favorable direction. An optional swim will be available to athletes at 2:30 p.m.

Fly home on Sunday with my legs in the suitcase!

Joe Hinton's one man uniform brigade did such an outstanding job that the uniforms will arrive this week, prior to Warhawk triathlon March 14 and the Sunrise kick-off party March 15.  Stay tuned for specific details on pick-up.  Thanks, Joe

Your 2009 Sunrise Uniforms are here and will be ready for you to pick up at Sportspectrum anytime during normal store hours Tuesday 10 Mar thru Thur 12 Mar. Any remaining will be picked up by me and you will have to chase me down..but, if for some reason you cannot make these dates just let me know and  I can make other arrangements.
Procedure: Go to Sportspectrum and find a Sunrise Uniform Roster at the counter. Locate your name and corresponding Number. Give number to store attendant, receive your uniform and please sign roster.

Most important... When you are at Sportspectrum please remember to Thank the staff there for their tremendous help to Sunrise. They have graciously made their facilities and staff available for receiving the uniforms beginning with the samples, followed by the try-on suits, fitting rooms, taking orders and now distributing the finished suits. So please take the time to give them a personal "Thank You"..better yet, BUY SOMETHING while you are there. They always have some great bargains and great merchandize.

Thank you Sunrise and Thank you Sportspectrum
