   Your 2010 officers

Doug Gotberg

President

I ran my first 10K during the summer of my sophomore year of college while training for football season. I did my first USAT event in 2007; a duathlon in Fort Worth, TX with a hybrid bike and toe clips. Though I placed about 130th of 138 I loved it, caught the bug, and bought a racing bike the following weekend.

My longest triathlon to date is an Olympic distance at our own Red River Tri. I have completed three marathons to date and look forward to many more.

My enthusiasm for multi-sport has fortunately rubbed off on my entire family and, as of 2008, we are all officially triathletes. Both of my daughters started two years ago with Splash n’ Dash and have continued on through Ironfish.  My wife Stephanie completed her first sprint last spring while participating in the Sunrise series.  We feel fortunate to have found the Sunrise community where we can pursue something we love while enjoying the company of many who do the same.   Doug

How did you get into Triathlons and/or Why?  In 2006 my marathon coach said I needed to do a triathlon, I was like yah, no way, I can’t swim.  9 months later I did my first sprint triathlon in Switzerland.  I was 10th  to the last out of the water and had to make up a lot of time on the bike and run.  I was elated when I crossed the finish line that I wanted MORE!  I signed up for a masters swim class and registered and competed in a few tris in 2008, including Germany 70.3 Half Ironman.    What has been your worst and/or favorite experience? Best:  Germany 70.3.  My best friend who eventally becamse my husband, Bobby and I trained really hard for a good year, and when race day came I was having the best time of my life and when I crossed that finish line I was ready to commit to doing a full IM in 2010.   Worst:  2006 Frankfurt Germany Marathon, ran a 10K race the day before which was supposed to be a easy jog since I had a cold but got a bit competitive and hammered, won my age group and 1st overall female,  but wore my self out and the next day running the Frankfurt marathon I came down half way through the race with a bad case of tonsillitis.  I started to run a high fever and vomiting all over the place.  I felt great from the start until mile 13 and it just hit me hard.  I still finished the race, but with a horrible time of 5 hours 5 mins.  So aweful!  Went straight to the ER and was given meds and sent home for a week of bed rest.  What is your favorite prerace and post race foods, rituals?  Nothing sweet after a race, and  must watch Finding Nemo and sleep with my stuffed Shamu (no not my hubby).   Goal race or what you’d like to accomplish in 2010? Louisville IM!! And to finish each race without injury and to do my very best!                Any interesting fact that or talent that we don’t know of?   I am very competitive, but most people already know that.  I really don’t have any special hidden talent, but do enjoy woodworking and making things.  Pretty much will try a my hand in just about anything, I love a challenge!

1986, I was a 30 year old single mother with a set of 3 year old twins, needing some extra energy and to be a good role model for my children.  Started running at lunch from the downtown YMCA and I kept hearing Calvin Sears and David Taggart talk about triathlons.  Like most, I had a steel 10 speed with a kick stand that was more than 15 years old and was Rivercities bound by 1991.  Did my first marathon in 1997 and by 1999, added mountain biking into the mix and started adventure racing, Xterra and mountain bike racing.  I’ve done numerous 18-48 hour adventure races in Las Vegas, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri.  Xterra has sent me the age group Regional Champion jersey three consecutive years.  Finished my first ½ Ironman at DeGray in August, 2008 and am registered for Ironman Kentucky in August, 2009.

My most favorite thing is to mountain bike internationally with guided groups, specifically Saddle Skedaddle.  I went to Copper Canyon in 2005, Morocco in 2006, Bulgaria in 2007 and Croatia in 2008.  Sardinia or Victoria Falls seem to be the next most likely candidates.  The little window in life with grown kids, no grandchildren, healthy parents and a mature career is a great place.

The Sunrise Tri Club has some big shoes to fill for the new officers and we hope to keep the momentum going.  Email:  TLWhite1@bellsouth.net

How did you get into Triathlons and/or Why? Three years ago I started running.  I bought a hybrid bike at River Cities (Ian told me that I wouldn’t be satisfied with it), but I rode it for a year just to enjoy plain old bike riding.  Then my friend Heather Bradford talked me into cycling with her on Sunday afternoons, but I couldn’t keep up on that non-road bike.  She eventually talked me into doing a Sunrise Series and buying a better bike. What has been your worst and/or favorite experience? Worst – 2009 Meat Pie – I had a decent swim and bike, but stomach problems forced me to walk the entire 5k….in agony.  Favorite – 2009 Warhawk – I really tried hard that day and I got a third place medal – a big deal for me. Goal race or what you’d like to accomplish in 2010? 2010 Goals – I am training with USAFIT to run the Rock n Roll Marathon in New Orleans.  I plan to do my first 70.3, but haven’t picked out the city yet (can anyone recommend a cool weather site with flat bike and run routes, and a swift swim current??) Any interesting fact that or talent that we don’t know of?  I quilt and have received several blue ribbons.  I still love  to sew and quilt, but since I took up running and tri’s a few years back,  I don’t have the time to dedicate to it, just not enough hours in a day or days in a week for this busy woman!

 Denise Cook

Social Coordinator / Points Recorder How did you get into Triathlons and/or Why? In 1995, I watched by brother do the River Cities Triathlon – he came up with a bunch of friends from Lafayette to participate.  After watching him and his friends compete and have so much fun, I decided I wanted to do one.  Two years later, I learned how to swim with the Master’s group, got a used bike and did River Cities.  It was great! What has been your worst and/or favorite experience? Ironman Florida 2009!!!!  My first marathon in Maui, Hawaii (1999).  I hit the wall at mile 20, suffered for 6 miles and had to have IVs at the finish. Stayed in the medical tent a couple of hours.  Luckily I was able to enjoy Hawaii the next day ;)   Goal race or what you’d like to accomplish in 2010? No goal race for 2010.  Plan to do more sprints and have fun this year! Any interesting fact that or talent that we don’t know of?  I love to sing.  I sang in the church choir for a few years.  Sang with my mom at my grandfather’s funeral and sang a solo part at my uncle’s funeral a couple of weeks ago.  I’m not the best singer, but I can sing OK.
